A Little Ray Of Sunshine?

Shanghai is likely to see some light smog as the week begins, a result of the stable weather brought by a dry and sunny Laba Festival on Sunday, forecasters said.

The city air is forecast to be lightly to moderately polluted this morning. But the smoggy conditions will be soon cleaned up by the drizzle expected tomorrow.

The drizzle will linger through Wednesday with a chance of some sleet. Skies will turn cloudy from Thursday.

According to the weather bureau, today will be warmer with the high increasing to 10 degrees Celsius and a low of 4. Affected by the south-moving cold air, tomorrow will be cooler with the mercury dropping to a range of 5 to 9 degrees. Wednesday will be even colder with a high of 5 and a low of 3. Thursday and Friday the temperatures will get higher and fluctuate between 2 and 11 degrees.

Yesterday was marked by the traditional festival Laba which falls on the eighth day of the 12th lunar month, when people usually eat Laba porridge for good luck. It was also the first day of 2019 when downtown residents saw sunshine.

Netizens joked online that Shanghai should change its name to Guiyang, which could literally mean “precious sun” in Chinese.

This week should give us a little more sight of sunny skies.
