Thousands of people, keen to snap up last minute bargains, attended the final hours of this year’s Shanghai Book Fair. Many of the visitors were students from outside of Shanghai. They were excited to have the opportunity to purchase bargain-priced books they found difficult to get in their hometowns. Fiction and poetry readings by authors were also a crowd pleaser and inspired many people to buy books they would normally not purchase. This year, e-books and virtual reality headsets were used to attract even more potential book lovers.
According to the Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau, Shanghai residents read an average of 6.1 books per year, higher than the national average, and with support from the Shanghai Government to further encourage readers and improve the facilities; Shanghai’s reading average is on the way to increase even further.
