This year’s Shanghai’s Annual Book Fair has attracted the heads of China’s leading bookstores to discuss the future of bookshops. Cafes, snacks and niche “pop up” stores featuring specialized categories of literature are just some of the new facilities that owners are offering to customers. The owners believe that the future of bookstores is not only to offer more and smaller stores with more targeted selections and cozy atmospheres, their research also shows that customers are less inclined to travel in search of a good book than they were before. Ms. Jing Li, Deputy G.M of Shanghai Xinhua Media Co. believes that the new challenge for bookstores is not just to supply books for the reader; it is to supply the right books for readers.
