Centre Pompidou Teams Up With West Bund Museum

Another high-profile art venue on the Huangpu River, the West Bund Museum, will officially open to the public on November 8, kicking off a five-year exhibition cooperation with the Centre Pompidou in France. This is the first cooperation project of its kind for the Centre Pompidou in Asia. French President Emmanuel Macron was on hand to unveil the West Bund Museum.

In the summer of 2017, a memorandum of understanding was signed with the Shanghai West Bund Development Group with the support of the Xuhui government to work on the opening of the Centre Pompidou.

The West Bund Art Museum was designed by the British architect David Chipperfield. It took three years to build, with a building area of 25, 000 square meters. After the opening, the museum will first present two opening exhibitions, displaying the works of hundreds of world’s top artists, covering all fields of creation.

The opening exhibition of the museum is The Shape of Time —— Highlights of the Centre Pompidou Collection vol. I. The exhibition has collected over 100 pieces of works from the Centre Pompidou. Taking the 20th century and the 21st century as the main line, it introduces the history of the Centre Pompidou in art collection, as well as the important origin of relevant collections with Europe and even the whole western society.

The other exhibition taking place at the same time is Observations——Highlights of the Centre Pompidou New Media Collection. It will focus on the development of new media art in an interdisciplinary way.
