After just one month, Shanghai’s new regulations on garbage-sorting has already had an impact. Implemented last July, there’s since been an 11.7 percent drop in dry trash, with the Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau putting a stop to the compression of mixed garbage. Over the past twenty-six days, an average of 8200 tons of wet trash was sorted per day, 17,100 tons of dry trash, and 4400 tons of recyclable material was collected each day. However, offices and shopping malls still have a long way to go and may face steep fines.
