Earthquakes Rattle Sichuan

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Changning County in Yibin City, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, on Monday night, killing at least 13 people, injuring more than 200.

Local authority has identified the 12 deceased as six woman and six men. Among whom, nine were from Changning County, while the three others were from Gongxian County.

 

Apart from the 12 dead, a notice from local emergency department said a total of 103,771 people from Changning County and vicinities were affected.

 

Over 10,000 houses damaged, including 73 leveled. Two motorways were blocked and one dam was damaged as a result of the quakes.

At least 134 people were injured after the earthquake occurred, local authorities said.

 

A strong tremor was still felt in the disaster area on Tuesday morning, local media reported.

 

Disaster relief supplies have arrived at the scene and the rescue mission is currently underway.

More than 15 minor quakes measuring above magnitude 3.0 have been detected since Monday night and aftershocks are said to continue in the region.

 

The latest, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, happened on Tuesday morning.

 

The quake damaged local power supply, transportation system and telecommunications.

As of Tuesday morning, at least 12 people were confirmed dead and 125 others were injured after an earthquake occurred, a spokesperson from the local government said in a press conference.

 

The Ministry of Emergency Management has activated an emergency response, local media reported.

 

A rescue team of 2,016 people rushed to the scene, and a follow-up rescue team of 1,204 people will also arrive at the disaster area, local authorities said.

Another 5.3-magnitude earthquake with a depth of 17 km hit Changning County at 7:34 a.m. local time on Monday.

Eleven people were killed and 122 others were injured after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Changning County in Yibin City, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, on Monday night, the local emergency department reported.

 

According to local officials, some 23 people sustained serious injuries.

 

The earthquake occurred at 10:55 p.m. Monday (Beijing time) with a depth of 16 km.

 

Rescuers are still searching for the victims.
