Shanghai hasn’t permitted fireworks within the Outer Ring Road in the last three years, due to heavy air pollution and casualties in 2015. Local officials say the fireworks ban will be expanded even further this year to up to 1,025 blocks outside the Outer Ring.
The total number of fireworks sold will be down this year, as well. There are only nine legal vendors who will begin sales on February 10th, and they will only sell 2,700 boxes total, down 300 from last year.
Even with the ban and the decreased sales, a peaceful Chinese New Year of the Dog needs the cooperation of both the people and the authorities.
