The first China-built highway in Serbia was opened to traffic yesterday and was celebrated with a special inauguration ceremony to mark the occasion. The 300-kilometer highway stretches from Serbia’s capital Belgrade to neighboring Montenegro, and when finally completed will ensure better connections to other Balkan states. It is the first highway to be constructed under the stewardship of China and marks the co-operation of further long-term projects between central and eastern European countries. The Serbian President, Aleksander Vucic was on the first bus to travel along the highway and said it “marks a new quality of life for the country and will attract investors to cities and towns along the route.” He also said Serbia and China share a great friendship and thanked president Xi for the Belt and Road Initiative saying that it had already contributed greatly to the development of Serbia.
