How Modern is China?

China may have the tallest buildings, fastest trains, largest shipping hubs, and the fastest growing economy, but it also has massive imbalances between urban and rural populations, an unsustainable economic/industrial model,  and a lack of creativity in its education.


This final episode of China’s Challenges: The Chinese Dream examines taobao villages (where former farmers have become internet entrepreneurs), new laws enabling farmers to profit from land transactions, the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, and reforms in Chinese education, including science and technology. Through these, we see the challenges China faces on its path to realizing its dream of becoming a fully modernized country.
