Mandatory trash sorting rules have been in effect in Shanghai since the regulations were passed in the summer of 2019. Household waste is now required to be sorted into four categories: wet waste, dry waste, recycle waste and hazardous waste.
Many districts in Shanghai are employing innovative ways to monitor trash-sorting.
Some districts have garbage trucks with sensors that can send all of its data to the community management staff, who can then keep a check on how many collections have been made. In some parts of Shanghai, garbage sorting has also been incentivized. Households are rewarded with points that they can avail as gifts at local shopping centers.
