Shanghai SIPG won the Chinese Super League Title last night, clinching with one game still to go in the season after a 2-1 victory over Beijing Renhe. This is the first CSL title for the city since the league was launched in 2004. This marks the end of Guangzhou Evergrande’s seven-year run of titles.
The Brazilian star captain Hulk and new coach Vitor Pereira played big parts in the maiden championship for the club, and legendary Shanghai coach Xu Genbao also contributed with a special training camp on Chongming Island for some of the players.
The last top-tier league title for the city was back in 1995 when Shenhua won during the Jia-A era. It’s been a long time coming, so great thanks to SIPG!
