Want to be healthy? Then be sure to eat your candy!
Pear paste candy was originally created during the Tang Dynasty for the royal family. It is a blend of many different traditional Chinese medicines, all mixed into a sugary pear treat so it goes down easier.
Wu Shenzhong is the third generation of Shanghai pear paste candy-makers, but he is afraid this time-honored tradition will fade away soon. It’s hard work to make the candy, and he’s having a tough time finding a young person to take over for him when he retires, but he is committed to keeping tradition alive.
We hope that he does manage to find a replacement so he can take a well deserved retirement. It’s important to continue traditions, especially when they taste so good!
