Test runs of phase 2 of the Songjiang tram system began on Wednesday without passengers and will continue for at least 45 days, said the tram operator.
Phase 2 covers 12.9 kilometers and 20 stops. The trams are expected to start taking passengers in August.
The test runs may inconvenience some passengers riding on phase 1.
“Some trams will not stop at Zhongchen Road and Canghua Road stations,” said Shen Jialin, deputy director of the tram operator. “Passengers will be asked to get off one stop ahead and wait for the next tram.”
When the second phase starts operations, the system will have two separate lines. Line 1 runs from Canghua Road to Xinmiaosan Road. Line 2 is a loop through Songjiang old and new towns.
Passengers can transfer to Metro Line 9 at Songjiang Sports Center and Songjiang University Town stations.
Phase 3, the east extension of tram Line 1 from Xinmiaosan Road to Xinqiao Railway Station, will start test runs this year.
Around 11,000 people take the tram every day.
