The ancient town of Zhujiajiao in the early morning is a wonderful picture postcard of life in the water town. A loud trumpet rings out, and people stop, mesmerized by the sounds. In the morning breeze, a group of students from Shanghai’s music college gather on the bridge, and the refrain of “My Motherland and I” drifts across the river and through the alleys.
Conductor Xiao Bai, sculptor Yang Dongbai, national moral model nominee Chen Shaolong, volunteer Ding xiaomu and other representatives of Qingpu came to the bridge to unfurl the giant five-starred red flag and integrate their blessing to the motherland in the song.
It was all part of the celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. If you happen to come across one of these flash mobs in the coming days, don’t be shy, join in!
